While some companies may advertise a low daily rate, you want to make sure you know all the fees prior to selecting your rental.  There are many extras that typically add to the total cost including mileage fees, generator fees, add-on package fees, cleaning fees, fuel fees, late return fees, etc.    

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning and maintenance should be top priority when selecting a rental.  Ask about how often maintenance is performed, how new damage is handled, what cleaning products are used and how often, etc.  When dealing with individuals, inquire about who is performing it and to what level.   

Reputation and Reviews

Look into reviews for the company or vehicle you are considering renting.  It is important to know who you are renting from and what quality overall rental experience you will receive.  Keep in mind any mechanical issues or problems while on the road may require support.  

Cancellation Policy

Privately owned rentals may be cancelled unexpectedly due to owner scheduling conflicts, maintenance issues, personal emergencies, or damage from previous renters. This can leave travelers scrambling for a replacement close to their trip dates so have a backup plan in place.
